What is an audiologist?

An audiologist is a qualified health professional who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss and balance disorders. They aim to manage, preserve and improve the hearing of their patients, treating people of all ages and backgrounds.

To become an audiologist in Australia, practitioners must complete a Masters-level degree in clinical audiology and meet the competency and membership requirements of Audiology Australia’s Accredited Audiologist program, including the completion of a one-year clinical internship.

What does an audiologist do?

Clinical audiologists provide a variety of services to their patients. Some of these services include:

  • Conducting hearing tests and screenings.
  • Diagnosing and evaluating hearing loss.
  • Fitting and adjusting hearing aids.
  • Assessing and diagnosing balance disorders.
  • Treating and assisting in the management of ear diseases and conditions, such as tinnitus.
  • Fitting hearing protection, including custom earplugs.
  • Ear wax removal.
  • Recommending appropriate assistive technology.
