Signs that you need a hearing test

3.5 million Australian adults are affected by hearing loss - and unfortunately, as you get older, the chances of being impacted by it only increase.

It can be distressing or debilitating to feel like you’re missing out on parts of conversations or not properly able to understand friends and family. However, the good news is that if you recognise the signs early, there are ways to improve the quality of your hearing.

If you recognise yourself in one or more of these statements, you might be experiencing some of the symptoms of hearing loss:

  • People often seem to be mumbling or speaking quietly
  • You’re often asking people to repeat themselves
  • It’s tiring to keep straining to understand what people are saying
  • Background noise can prevent you from hearing conversations
  • It can be hard to tell the direction from which sound is coming from
  • You need the volume on the TV turned up all the time
  • It’s becoming harder to hear voices of women and children
  • People have been telling you that you are speaking too loudly
  • Your family has a history of hearing problems
  • You’ve been exposed to a noisy work environment
  • There’s a perpetual ringing sound in your ears

If any of these issues seem familiar, don’t worry - you’re not alone. This is much more common than you might think and help is available at our hearing clinics to find you a solution.

A regular ear examination is very important - in fact, you’re recommended to have them once a year. By having these regular tests, we can track how much this vital part of your wellbeing may or may not be changing.

If you have any concerns about your hearing or just wish to get some information on your ear health, please book a free hearing test with us. It’s a simple first step in changing the quality of your life for the better.

Where can you get a hearing test done?

There are over 300 National Hearing Care clinics across Australia, so our service is readily available to help you.

During your initial consultation, our friendly hearing care professionals will ask about your medical history and lifestyle, then perform some simple tests. The process is very straightforward and only takes about 15 minutes.

If those tests reveal hearing loss that might benefit from a hearing aid, we’ll recommend a more comprehensive test with an audiologist or audiometrist.

Please note, your appointment will take place in a clinic following appropriate social distancing and hygiene practices to ensure a COVID-safe environment.
